About Your Hosts - About The Decks

Gay guesthouse in Cape Town

For three years, many visitors have appreciated this residence comprising five rooms and two apartments ideally set out around a wooden pool in luscious vegetation. Without any buildings obstructing the view over the ocean and signal hill, sunset views are a must. The service is friendly/familiar and the guests sometimes ask whether they are going to see friends from their previous vacation.

After only 3 years 25% of the travellers have already returned. Guests are mainly from the old colonialist countries of Southern Africa (Holland, England, plus Germany) and from the French-speaking countries (Switzerland, Belgium and France). Many are regulars and return every summer. The house is decorated in modern Anglo European style with some maritime architectural details -  sail along the coast of Southern Africa at The Decks.

Have a sundowner at The Decks - it is a local custom to have an aperitif, usually a local white wine facing the sunset on the beach or on the terrace - and you will understand why Cape Town took over the first position in the world from Miami for taking advertising pictures and shooting commercials. The quality of the light is exceptional! Many affluent people from Southern Africa choose Cape Town as their primary vacation spot or have a holiday home there. The area around Cape Town is like an African French Riviera.

South Africa is by far the most democratic and advanced country regarding gay rights outside Europe. Equal rights are granted by the constitution. It is possible to sign a life-time partnership contract in front of a notary, which gives the same rights regarding immigration law as a heterosexual marriage.

Cape Town is considered to be the gay capital on the African continent. The Decks is halfway  between the gay night-life and the gay beach of Clifton. To each of them it will be a five-minute drive by car. The use of a car is recommended in Cape Town, allowing you to see the magnificent countryside or go on a trip to the beaches and to the Cape of Good Hope.

The evening traditionally starts at Café Manhattan - a unique combination of café, restaurant and bar - afterwards going to the Bronx ... where the atmosphere gets hotter as the hours pass. Be entertained by Charl playing house music at Cruz - a chic and artistically decorated bar/club - on three nights a week. Finally, on the weekends at Sliver a pure and hard disco sound will keep the eager ones dancing until two o'clock in the morning.

For those who like progressive music, influenced by the London scene, numerous places are worth a visit. The crowd there is young, mixed, and international, with a good number of models...

For an evening worth a detour, visit the GAT party. This party is celebrated three times a month in a sport hall in the suburbs gathering gays from the countryside and a  few adventurous gays from the city, including sometimes a group coming from The decks to experience a “different” nightlife. The atmosphere reminds that of a ballroom and encounter of the third kind...

Cape cuisine is closely related to the European and international cuisine with African and Malay influence. Fish and meat are excellent and very affordable. The wines are also quite good.

Services offered in the Guesthouse are varied and extensive. There is a airport shuttle service, tours, bicycle rental, wi-fi Internet access, English courses provided by a language school, and massages. During high season - in the months of November until February - a cocktail party is organized every Saturday at sunset. The most sought after accessory turned out to be the pink ring - a pink life saving ring that eventually became a sort of fetish accessory amongst the guests.

Erwan likes to try different occupations. He has been a consultant in social finances and for start-up entrepreneurs and a restaurant owner in Miami Beach. He keeps himself busy looking for villas in Corsica and works on land development projects at home in Brittany.

Apart from his life at The Decks Charl is a manager in a youth hostel in town and a DJ! He is passionate about music a tracks down the newest songs on the internet. He surprises the guests while naming the artists from different countries and appreciating their specific musical style. While playing at Cruz, when he sees a friend from another country, he loves to let a song from his country slip into the play list.
